George looked out of the window onto the North Bay beach where wetsuit-clad surfers could be seen bobbing on the water, waiting for the next set of waves to assault the beach. The top floor room in the guest house gave him a panoramic view of the bay, and he had spent the morning enjoying the view and waiting for a call or text. Outside, tourists held their positions on the sands, or tracked up and down the steep grass bank leading from the top road to a lower road and the sea wall defence. An open-topped double-decker bus regularly drove along the seafront ferrying tourists from one end to the other.
Early this morning he had checked that the sash window opened fully and had climbed out onto the flat roof, then to the side of it. Keeping low, he had ensured that he had an escape route if required, and sure enough the adjoining terraced guest houses could be traversed over their rooftops to fire escapes at either end of the block. Experience and instinct had taught him to always have an escape plan. Nobody would know him in Barnston but self preservation never went amiss. Heâd received a call late last night advising him of his task for today but he was just awaiting the finalisation and authority to move forward. His phone buzzed on the table next to him.
Complete recce. Moira is en route
He had no need to reply. The sender would know that he had received the message and would trust that he would get on with the task. So, theyâre sending Moira! George was happy with that. Moira was a consummate professional. Heâd worked with her before. She knew her stuff and was reliable. He opened his photo app, checked the image of Marsden heâd received, grabbed his cigarettes and a baseball cap. A quick visual sweep of the room, all was tidy. He stepped out, closing the door gently behind him, and placed the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the handle. Room cleaning service had already been this morning. Taking a box of matches from his pocket, he removed one, and pushed it between the door and the doorframe. Old habits die hard, but they were habits that he lived, and survived by. He took the stairs to the ground floor where he exited the building and headed for the town centre.
Heâd checked the route on his phone and the walk was barely ten minutes. The streets were busy, as everyone enjoyed the sunny weather. George halted short of the main road and watched a police van cruise past completing its patrol. He was happy in the crowds. Just another tourist enjoying his day. Now on the main precinct he headed towards a side street and spotted the shop sign for Forsettiâs. George took a seat on a bench in the precinct which gave him a view of the shop front. He took out a cigarette. No need to move in close yet.
